In the Temple of Aphrodite

In the temple of Aphrodite he asked,
"What is the secret
of true and lasting love?"
Priests passed without answering. Statues and altars
loomed mutely.
The fragrant heat of candles and incense
coiled to heaven
carrying their wisdom with them.

At last
an old woman scrubbing the floor
said
softly,
simply:

"Want what you have."

  2. Ahhh. The best advice of the day! That could also be the answer to the secret of happiness. Funny...when asked, the majority of Americans say they are unhappy. No, not funny. I'm very glad to have read this. Nice job!

  4. @Brian: I like your addition. That's a very important point!

    @Yvonne: I think that for most people it is difficult to separate love from happiness, so I agree that their secrets are deeply entwined. It's no surprise to me that most people say they're unhappy ... our society has a way of raising expectations while also insisting that people deny themselves in many ways.

    @G-Man: You have an awesome weekend too, sir!

    @Raven: Thanks! I appreciate it.
